What is a Handpan?

The Handpan is a melodic, percussion instrument developed in the last two decades and inspired by the steel drums of Trinidad and Tobago. It’s convex shape allows for a soft, soothing tone.

The magic of the handpan is not only linked to its limited production volume, but also to it's healing qualities. The soft sounds emitted bring the body to vibrate at the same frequency as the instrument to release energetic and physical tension.

I use my handpan at the end of most of my Yoga classes to facilitate a peaceful 'Savasana' which is the relaxing final pose. Giving a class something relaxing to listen to allows focus to slow down the busy mind and bring a sense of peace to the end of a physical practice.

The Handpan is particularly useful when delivering meditation or 'Pranayama' (breathwork) and in creating a soundscape for Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep).

I have also used the drum to create an atmosphere at Yoga Festivals and outdoor events.
